Actuaries have always been the behind-the-scenes brains of insurance. Quietly crunching numbers, running models, and building risk pools that determine how much we all pay for insurance.
Now, with artificial intelligence entering the picture, things are changing rapidly – not just faster or more efficient, but different. We’re not just tweaking the math but rethinking the very idea of what a “risk pool” even is.
The Old Way – Group, Average, Hope for the Best
Traditional actuarial science relies on grouping people into categories based on age, gender, location, and a few key behaviors. You know the stereotypes:
- Young male drivers pay more.
- Smokers pay more.
- People in hurricane-prone areas pay more.
It’s worked decently for decades, but those models are very educated guesswork, relying on historical data and broad categories. It’s like trying to predict traffic using only the time of day and the weather report.
It can be helpful, but it lacks precision, particularly in predicting future behavior.
Enter AI – The Risk Pool Goes Granular
AI doesn’t guess, but learns, and that’s a game-changer for actuarial science. AI pulls in massive volumes of real-time data from telematics in your car, wearable fitness trackers, and online behavior, which moves actuarial science beyond traditional categories into building risk assessments at the individual level.
Instead of: “People like you tend to have this level of risk,” it’s, “You have this level of risk, and here’s why.” The actuarial math is being upgraded from a horse-drawn carriage to a Tesla, thanks to the personalized data it accesses through AI.
Hyper-Personalized Risk Means Smarter Pricing
For insurers, this means more accurate, and potentially fairer, pricing. In auto insurance, instead of rating someone solely based on age and ZIP code, AI can use informatics to look at how they drive:
- How often do they slam the brakes?
- How they handle sharp turns?
- At what time of day are they usually on the road?
The pricing becomes dynamic and deeply personalized. Health insurance can evolve similarly, with individuals’ consent.
Forget just asking about BMI or smoking history since AI can integrate personal health data from genetic markers to exercise habits into an individual’s premium calculations.
What Happens to the Risk Pool?
If pricing is done at an individual level, what happens to the risk pool concept? Do we still group people together to share risk, or does each person carry his or her own price tag?
That’s where the ethical questions arise. Pooling spreads out the cost, which makes coverage more affordable, especially for high-risk individuals.
But if AI pinpoints those individuals with laser accuracy, they could find themselves priced out of the market unless regulators step in. Just because we can price someone ideally doesn’t always mean we should.
Balancing Precision and Protection
The future of AI-driven actuarial work will be a balancing act. Precision is powerful, but it also has the potential to widen gaps, penalize the vulnerable, and undercut the foundational idea of insurance, shared risk.
Regulators and insurers alike will need to determine where to draw the line. Will there be “guardrails” that cap how much someone can be charged based on an AI risk profile?
Will traditional risk pools still exist for specific products or groups, while others go entirely individual? Is there a way to use the personal approach on the least risky and have shared risk available for others?
It’s an open question that we’ll all be part of answering.
Actuaries Aren’t Going Anywhere
Even with AI in the world, actuarial science still needs people who speak the language of data and ethics. The role is evolving from pure number-crunching to risk storytelling at an individual level.
And AI is the tool helping bring that story into sharper focus. The models are getting smarter, the data is getting deeper, and the possibilities are endless.
But the mission remains the same:
- Protect people
- Manage risk
- Keep insurance sustainable for everyone.
And these changes could make it all feel more human along the way. Welcome to the future of insurance that runs at the speed of now.
